Elvis Presley born January 8, 1935. His birth was shadowed by the death of his identical twin brother Jessie Garron Presley. Who was born first. Jessie had a blockage in his nasal and throat. Elvis was born into bitter poverty, his mother was illiterate. He became the most selling solo musical artist of all time surpassing over 1 billion records sold worldwide. He rose to fame in the 1950’s and his first regional hit song was “ That’s All Right” released in 1954 on sun records. On November 20, 1955 the “King of Rock and Roll” signed to RCA and two months later on January 27, 1956 he released his first #1 hit on the billboard pop chart “Heartbreak Hotel”. His biggest hit is generally considered to be “ It’s Now or Never”, released in 1960 and is one of the best selling physical singles of all time with over 20 million copies sold worldwide. Presley was also a movie star, he starred in 31 feature films between 1956 and 1969. Some of his most known movies include Love Me Tender, Loving You, Jailhouse Rock, King Creole, Blue Hawaii to name a few box office winners. “The King of Rock and Roll” had a monumental influence on Movies, Music and fashion Worldwide. He was on top of the world and arguably the most famous entertainment figure in the world but he had a dark side.
Dark side of Elvis Presley involved prescription drugs, junk food and animal cruelty. Elvis contributed very little to the creation of his own songs rumor has it that he may have made the title to the song but someone else would write it. Presley once said he never wrote a song in his life but he has songwriting credits because his management Colonel Tom Parker who would request a percentage of the songwriting to sing the song. He loved guns, would bring guns with him on stage in the 70’s. His catch phrase was “ Thank you very much”. Health problems began in the early 70’s and by the mid 70’s his health problems intensified with reports of him being overweight, experiencing drug induced mental dullness and struggling to perform, his drug use and by the time of his death in 1977 he was in poor physical and mental condition. At the time of death Elvis net worth was 5 million which would be $20-25 million in today’s economy.
Is Elvis “ The King of Rock and Roll” Presley the greatest musician to ever touch the musical airwaves and stage or was he a copycat that took credit for work he didn’t create? We can hate but we can’t debate the numbers. Elvis Presley is #1
